I really like the thumb release free spool - like a baitcaster. Here goes This is a small size star drag reel costing 250-300 usd. This is the first time I have tried their star drag model. The maxel reels are way cheaper in price so I have sold my jm´s and replaced them with maxel. I still believe that these reels are the ferraris of the convention reels out there with their twin drag constuction, dual AR bearings and dog/dogs and more. except a few tweeks on its cosmetics that includes different handle, t-bar, drag lever. However the powerspell series reels and Maxels transformer series reels are identical on the inside. For those not acquainted with maxel reels and gear Maxel I believe is a chinese brand who is either hardcopying jigging master or is a rebranded reel from a oem company which means that JM powerspell reels are aswell. Neither of these reels appear to be available in Australia so will be buying from JandH in the states, prompt replies from Josh for my many queries, good price and cheap shipping, seems a real gentleman. So last year spring I bought myself a Maxel hybrid 20. Never had one, and they are sexy looking.Ĭons - A bit more expensive, not as simple. Better for casting light jigs and lures, and also small baits if need to. Pros - smaller, star drag and thumb bar, therefore marginally better control for staying in the strike zone especially with lighter jigs. Pros - cheaper, goes with my other two SGs and the spares I have, easy to work on, lovely reels.Ĭons - had problems with drag adjusting itself (often at the worst possible moment), limitations on how light can go on jigs etc. Most of the reels use will be jigging and soft plastics in shallow water, species encountered range from small reefies to large YTK and Samson fish with trevally, snapper and tuna in between. Was initially looking at a Seigler SGN, but the Maxel intrigues me and their lever drags get mainly rave reviews from the kingfish boys in NZ. Anyone had any experience with the maxel hybrids? I'm looking for a small reel (lefty, so choices are limited) to put on a Black Hole PE 1-3 jig rod (will be used with Tasline PE 2 that breaks at about 28lb, rod has a small reel seat so choices more limited).
